    The Beginning of Knowledge

"The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth--Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction."

    Proverbs 1:1-7

In church we've been discussing wisdom and the pursuit of wisdom recently, and this verse has emerged several times. King Solomon was known for his prosperous kingdom and his abundant wisdom. People came from all around to visit his kingdom and brought him many gifts. What can we learn from King Solomon? We can learn how to gain widsom (which can be translated to skill in living) and live life to the fullest. We must begin our pursuit with fearing or being in awe of God; understanding His authority and purposes for our lives. If we don't begin at this point, what good is our wisdom? Not living for Him leads to a life lived in vain. King Solomon later writes:

"Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many. I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness. When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble."

    Proverbs 4:10-12

Solomon is writing Proverbs to his son giving him instruction to live his life by. He begins by explaining to him why he should want to pursue wisdom, and I think he explains why here: so that if we run, we will not stumble. If life were a race, wisdom trains us how to run, not only how to run, but how to run well - without stumbling. This analogy relates back to life in that if we were trained in how to live life abundantly we would not only finish life, but we would conquer it, living a life that demonstrates God's widsom lived out through our lives. Wisdom is something to be pursued. Living a life wisely demonstrates an attractive lifestyle to the watching world.

"Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'"

    Deuteronomy 4:6

This quote was taken from the Pentateuch where God was teaching the nation of Israel to follow his statutes and laws, saying that if they lived by His instruction and His wisdom that the watching world would recognize that wisdom and seek their wisdom. I believe that God planned the same for his Church. If we live attractive fruitful lives in this day, the watching world will see the wisdom in our lives and pursue the same wisdom for their lives.
