  • Ravi Zacharias on Meaning in Life

Those who have not yet experienced the success they covet find it impossible to believe that those who have attained it find it wanting in terms of giving meaning to life. The driving force behind our thriving marketing industry and the sovereignty of technopoly (to use Neil Postman's phrase) is to create new hungers to help us forget old ones. If the wheel of fortune does not deliver, we turn our attention toward the deception and enamorment we have with becoming the object of artistic adulation. This high-speed...

  • A Place for Fear

Is there a place for Fear in faith?  We seem to have arrived at a place where we believe fear should have no place in our lives and see fear in only a negative light.  Some people are offended by verses like “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7), claiming that promoting a life lived in fear is life not worth living.  However, contextually, these verses paint fear in a positive light.  So how can fear be a good thing or is this a different kind of fear?1 Some biblical translations...

  • Fragmentation of Scripture

I'm currently reading Practicing Gospel by Edward Farley. Farley takes some fairly radical stances on how the Gospel is preached in our western culture. Many of his arguments would most likely make many uncomfortable as he forces us to rethink much of what we've grown up with or the tradition we've taken for granted. This is not to say that his argument is not a valid argument, although I'm not sure I completely agree with all his conclusions in the book. However, one point that Farley brings up that really caused...

  • Godlessness

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture...

  • What is the Church?: Part III

Part III: Biblical Education Read What is the Church? Part I and What is the Church? Part II first. I would like to forewarn readers of this entry that this is once again my opinion and thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head. Please feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you have reflections or ideas of points that I may have missed. Thanks! What if we approached theology the same way we do our college education? You'll find people who boast of the many all-nighters then spent in college...

  • Point of Christianity

I'm currently finishing the book Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense by N.T. Wright. The book has been a fairly good one and I have enjoyed reading it. I'm presently in the last twenty pages of the book and read something I felt like sharing. If you have any feedback on your thoughts feel free to share them. "Despite what many people think, within the Christian family and outside it, the point of Christianity isn't 'to go to heaven when you die.' "The New Testament picks up from the Old the theme that...

  • What is the Church?: Part II

Part II: Household of God Read What is the Church? Part I first. This one took awhile to transfer my thoughts to paper. It may need some editing and will most likely evolve over the next few weeks. I welcome feedback if you have some. "When Scripture talks about church, it means community. The little fellowships of the heart that are outposts of the kingdom. A shared life. They worship together, eat together, pray for one another, go on quests together. They hang out together, in each other's homes. When Peter...

  • What is the Church?: Part I

Part I: Purpose Several years ago I became involved in a summer-long intense study that shaped my thinking on my life in light of God and His plan at a pivotal time in my life; right before college graduation. I was starting to decide the direction my life would take after I received my diploma. Like many people in my major I had been looking to the big cities of the Midwest United Stated in hopes of landing that all important internship with a large flagshipcompany and filling my pockets with money. At the same...

  • For All God's Worth

I just started reading For All God's Worth by N.T. Wright. I started with the introduction, naturally, and the opening of the book was so deep and thought provoking that I thought I would blog-it. "How can you cope with the end of a world and the beginning of another one? How can you put an earthquake into a test-tube, or the sea into a bottle? How can you live with the terrifying thought that the hurricane has become human, that fire has become flesh, that life itself came to life and walked in our midst? Christianity...
