a well lived bland life
Note: this blog is not baby-related. Anna and I have both been to Myanmar (Burma) at least once (I've been once, and Anna has been twice). While there I heard about and experienced a game called Chinlone which uses a small plastic or wooden wicker-style ball and is played much like hacky-sack or over a net, using any part of your body except your hands. I recently stumbled upon several videos of Chinlone and Sepak Takraw (Southeast Asian name for game played over a net). Check out the videos below: Traditional...

We have had a few people inquiring into the effects of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar and whether anyone we know was affected or injured. Steve Larson, whom we have both traveled with to Myanmar, was actually on his way into Myanmar when the cyclone hit, and arrived only a few days after the cyclone. He returned late last week and has sent us an update on what he learned while in Myanmar (Burma). The following is an excerpt from his update: We arrived in Yangon on Tuesday, May 6th after Cyclone Nargis ravaged the Irrawaddy...

Happy New Year! I hope everyone rang in the new year with a bang, I however didn't make it to midnight and fell asleep shortly after 11pm. The night of the 30th I didn't sleep well and had to wake up...

Well today is the last day before I leave for Myanmar. I will be leaving for the airport in Des Moines tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM, and our flight leaves at roughly 8:50. I will then be traveling for the next 30 hours and will arrive in Yangon, Myanmar on December 16th (after spending a brief night in Bangkok: flight arrives at 11pm and next flight leaves at like 6am). When I arrive it will still be the 15th here in Iowa, so I will actually be in the future. I wonder if they'll have flying cars in the future...

We had our meeting this past Saturday regarding the trip to Myanmar. We discussed a lot of the history of Myanmar, history of the Church in Myanmar, and the history of BILD's affiliation with Myanmar. The basic summary of the three historical categories is: Myanmar was evangelized by a Baptist church from Minnesota in the early eighteen hundreds and colonized by the British in the late eighteen hundreds who named it Burma. During the time of the British colonization the gospel flourished throughout Burma. After...

I went to the doctor to receive my vaccinations today. I only received one shot and that was for the Hepatitis A vaccine. The doctor gave me prescriptions for Malaria, Typhoid fever, and for a general antibiotic (in case my body doesn't like the food). He also showed me a map and asked where I would be traveling. There were a few places that looked familiar so I pointed to them and said and everywhere in between, including rural areas. He also gave me a speech about not drinking the water, swimming only in chlorinated...

I received my first passport ever in the mail a few weeks ago. I had to pay an extra $60 to have it expedited because passports used to be routed through New Orleans, but since hurricane Katrina passports are being routed to other companies throughout the country. The guy at the post office said it would probably take about 6 to 8 weeks to get a passport, and by the time I had my applications filled out and was turning it in, it became 8 to 10 weeks. This was about exactly 10 weeks from our departure date (December...
