a well lived bland life
Ames is flooded. After waking up this morning we checked the news and saw that Ames has basically become an island. The two rivers that run through Ames, Squaw Creek and Skunk River, are at levels higher than the flooding in 1993. I've been unable to find an exact measurement of how much rain fell, but I heard a rumor of about 9 inches.
It appears that both Target and Walmart may have taken on water, although we'll have to wait to find out for sure. Many other business have obviously been flooded including HIlton Colosseum and CY Stephens Auditorium.
Here's a video from the Iowa State Cyclones website of the flooding.
Here is a video from KCCI showing the flooding around the city.
Here is a link to some pictures I found on Flickr also.
Ames also had a main water main break contaminating the water supply and emptying an entire water tower. The city is on a "boil-water-policy" until further notice which could be a couple of days. It seems weird to have a water shortage after receiving a record rain fall.
Iowa State University is also closed tomorrow due to the lack of drinkable water. This is the second time in the past year that the University has had to close. In December we closed because of snow, and now because of rain.
I feel moderately justified in the work I put into cleaning our basement last night after seeing how much rain actually fell and its affect on the rest of the city and knowing that it could have been much much worse.
