a well lived bland life
Oh Lord, Your glory is seen from the rising sun to the highest of the peaks,Your fingerprints are imprinted on the smallest of life to the greatest of feats,Your Plan is sovereign and everlasting,Your ways are wiser than the comprehension of the knowing,Your love, unrivaled on all the earth. Your gracious provision is undeserving to all whom you pour it upon,You build up the humble and small,And tear down the strong and haughty,Bringing all to an equal level, and glory to Your Son.Your ways are wiser than the comprehension...

Life has been good. My favorite kind of movie is the kind of movie where for most of the movie you’re totally confused as to what is going on, but by the end everything comes together in perfect harmony. I love the intricate planning and structuring that is required to make a film like that. You’re always left with a sense of awe and bewilderment. Movies that are like this would be “The Usual Suspects”, “Momento”, “Fight Club”, and “Lucky Number Slevin”. When you watch a movie like this you have to pay special attention...

Happy Thanksgiving! Today is the day we celebrate and give thanks as a nation. Many people give thanks to their family and friends and celebrate with close and extended family while others use today has a day to honor and give thanks to the God who created and has blessed us. This morning my grandma handed me a Scheels ad that was in the Des Moines Register. The ad is two quotes from Abraham Lincoln during his presidency in 1863. Proclamations of Thanksgivingby President Abraham Lincoln, 1863It is the duty of nations...

Imagine this. You're walking through a wooded area, miles from anywhere, and you come upon a small patch of trees bearing fruit. You've been walking for miles and haven't eaten in hours and your stomach is growling something fierce. You are then confronted with the wild orchard before you. As hungry as you are, the tree you choose will be the one that appears most delicious to you. Why choose the tree with the rotten or bruised fruit? No one would. The fruit represents the tree. You are going to choose which tree...

One year ago today I posted my first blog. The site has changed several times and evolved into what we have before us now. 12,633 hits, 31 blogs, 70 comments, 444 miles across Iowa on a bike, over 8,000 miles to Burma and back, 1,500 miles to California and back, and 365 days later I am where I stand now. Looking back over the past year it's amazing how things have changed, how God has worked in my life, and where I am compared to where I was. Looking back even further it's hard to believe that 5 years ago I was...

Today was a hectic but a fantastic day. I woke up with the sunrise and ran out to the beach to snap some pictures. Today is also Sylvia Law's birthday, even though she's back home in Iowa, here's a shout-out to her. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SYLVIA We met in the morning for breakfast then followed with time of worship and then Doug Shiplett shared about the work that is going on currently in Cambodia and Laos. We were then given a paper that Mike Sanchez had written about the centrality of the church and everyone...

Today was a great day. Woke up without an alarm for the first time in months. We then headed for breakfast. We ate breakfast at Aldo's which is right on the harbor in Santa Cruz. Breakfast at Aldo's on the harbor, Santa Cruz, CA Next a couple of us stopped a kinkos to copy some stuff off so Caleb and I went next door to a small coffee (Firefly Coffee House) and discussed life and life-related issues. Firefly Coffee House, Santa Cruz, CA After a couple hours we headed to the warf and admired the beauty...

Airports. You pay a couple hundred dollars for a quick ride across the country and they think that gives them the right to then take advantage of you and rip you off. I’m currently aboard a flight from Chicago to San Francisco and in the midst of the grand excitement that is flying aboard an aircraft, examined my empty 20oz. bottle of Coca Cola to see the price tag mocking me like a little boy who just beat me in a board game. I was hungry and in a hurried run across the Chicago O’Hare airport and decided that food...

"The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth--Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction...
